“I embed hidden eyes within beauty — layered through color and epoxy resin, camouflaged by shimmer and depth. You may not see them, but you feel them. I like to ask the viewer to count the eyes they see.”

The Panoptica series began in 1993, when Julie first walked through barbed-wire, badge-controlled gates at the Puget Sound Naval Shipyard — flanked by armed watchtowers and surveillance — while working for the Department of Defense aboard aircraft carriers and submarines. That experience shaped the questions she continues to ask through her work: Who is surveilling whom?

Abstract Only! — Wailoa Arts & Cultural Center
15th Annual Abstract Only!, a Hawai‘i–Shanghai collaborative exhibit, Wailoa Arts & Cultural Center, Hilo, HI — August 2025. Juror: Glenn Yamanoha. Sponsored by the Shanghai Abstract Artists Association.
Julie exhibited Mama’s Flowers and Pu‘uwai Pele (Heart of Pele) on the Hawai‘i side of the exchange. When it came time to ship work to Shanghai for the Liu Haisu Art Museum exhibition, the large flower sculpture proved too difficult to ship — so Pu‘uwai Pele made the journey to Shanghai instead.
