Inspired by Hawaiʻi — from mountain peaks to ocean depths — Julie Scheyer transforms her experiences into one-of-a-kind sculptural art.

Every sculpture begins with two crystal-clear liquids — Part A and Part B. Through a polymeric reaction, her experiences are transformed into sculptural lighted art inspired by the beauty, movement, and spirit of Hawaiʻi.

Before becoming an artist, Julie earned her degree in Chemical Engineering from Oregon State University in 1995 — which she calls the hardest thing she’s ever done, and the most rewarding — and worked at Intel, where she helped champion environmentally responsible lead-free manufacturing technologies and was awarded U.S. Patent 6,288,906, “Multiple Layer Printed Circuit Board Having Power Planes on Outer Layers,” issued under her former name, Julie Scheyer-Furnanz.

Her background in polymer chemistry allows her to approach materials differently than most artists. Through years of experimentation, she has developed original techniques that guide the chemistry during the curing process, creating luminous depth, flowing forms, and organic textures that are uniquely her own. While every sculpture begins with the same two crystal-clear liquids, no two are ever alike.

Living on Maui is the heart of Julie’s inspiration. As a competitive wing foiler — the first woman wingfoiler, with channel crossings from Maui to Lānaʻi, Maui to Molokaʻi, and Molokaʻi to Oʻahu — former windsurfer, kiteboarder, and scuba diver, she has experienced Hawaiʻi from perspectives few people ever witness, from soaring above the ocean to looking upward toward the light from beneath the surface. Those experiences are transformed into sculptural lighted art that reflects the movement of the ocean, coral reefs, and clouds over Haleakalā.

Every sculpture is individually hand-shaped during the chemical reaction. Because chemistry, temperature, timing, and movement are never exactly the same twice, no piece can ever be truly replicated. Each sculpture is a genuine one-of-a-kind original, created exclusively by hand in Maui, Hawaiʻi.

She used her Intel stock options to buy an apartment building and converted it into Hood River Suites, her boutique extended-stay apartment hotel — its income funds her art.

Her wave wall panels fuse her polymer art with composite structural support — a layup of parabeam fiberglass formed on a CNC mold — engineered in collaboration with Ken Winner, Mark Rapahost, and Francesco Maffei.

Giving back is an important part of Julie’s artistic journey. She was honored to serve as the Official Trophy Artist for the 2025 and 2026 Maui to Molokaʻi Challenge, creating one-of-a-kind sculptural awards celebrating one of Hawaiʻi’s iconic ocean crossings. 

Her work is also installed at Mary Bridge Children’s Hospital in Tacoma, Washington, and she regularly contributes artwork to charitable fundraisers and silent auctions. Julie believes art has the power to lift spirits, inspire connection, and create moments of peace, wonder, and hope.

Each sculpture is an invitation to slow down, look toward the light, and experience Hawaiʻi through Julie’s eyes.
